The Rīga Conference, “A Transforming NATO in a New Global Era”

During the NATO summit in Riga a high level international conference shall take place where more than 200 globally renowned academics, the key opinion leaders, experts in security policy and journalists from NATO member states and partner states will discuss topical issues in international security policy. This conference will be one of the most important accompanying events to the NATO summit in Riga.

The conference is organized by the Latvian Transatlantic Organization (LATO), Commission of Strategic Analysis and German Marshall Fund (GMFUS). Financial support for the conference in Riga is granted by the NATO Riga summit Support Committee. The President of the State of Latvia Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga is the patron of this event. Leaders of other countries have been invited to partake at the event.

The special conference format shall allow for free discussion on the key issues in the NATO agenda. Conference audience will be addressed by several high-level politicians. The President of the State of Latvia Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga will open the event. NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and other top-level politicians and opinion leaders will address the audience. The conference will end with a special session that several leaders of NATO states and governments are invited to attend.

The conference aim is to promote a dialogue on NATO transformation and the changing role of the Alliance in the era of globalization. The discussion will focus particularly on NATO enlargement issues in the future, including new solutions in relationship with the existing and eventual member states. The issue of energy security vis-a-vis NATO will also be discussed in the conference. During individual session the conference participants will exchange opinions on NATO operations in Afghanistan, the contribution of Alliance in the Balkans and on NATO relationship with Russia.

The conference shall be opened on November 27 with Gala dinner. The evening discussion shall take place right after the official reception. Only conference participants shall partake in this part of the events and the opinions expressed in the discussion will not be available to public. The conference will continue on November 28 and 29 and it will end with special addresses to the participants from NATO member state and government leaders in the afternoon of November 29.
