Discussion series for secondary school pupils


In order to promote the understanding of global politics and international security issues, the Latvian Trans-Atlantic Organization (LATO) in liaison with NATO member state and government meeting organization office shall organize a serious of discussion in Latvian secondary schools from September 15 to November 10.

The aim of the project is to promote the interest and understanding of Latvian secondary school pupils on security and defiance policy issues particularly with regard to the NATO Summit in Riga in November, 2006.

Several “visiting” lectures shall be presented in various town on Latvia within the discussion serious framework. Latvian officials and experts in foreign policy and defense policy issues with participate in the discussion serious along with representatives from the embassies to Riga from NATO member states. In the course of discussion the Latvian representatives provided information on activities and objectives of the Alliance as well as on Latvian participation to NATO while the foreign guests will present their experience from being a NATO member states and will outline the main gains from the participation in the Alliance.

A special 20 minute film on NATO which was made for this specific purpose will present the key principles of NATO activities now.

The discussion venues in Latvia have been the towns of: Nītaure, Cēsis, Krāslava, Preiļi, Limbaži, Pļaviņas, Aizkraukle, Valmiera, Rūjiena, Lielvārde, Lubāna, Jūrmala, Liepāja, Grobiņa, Tukums, Talsi, Jelgava, Dobele, Brocēni, Kuldīga, Jēkabpils, Viļaka and several schools in Riga.
