Intro

Rainis

He who evolves himself, endures.

Rainis

For Latvia, these words of wisdom from the legendary Latvian poet Rainis offer a fitting motto for the 2006 NATO Summit. The ability to anticipate, adjust and adapt to change has been a Baltic trait for thousands of years. It serves as sound advice to those who must meet the challenges that face transatlantic security today.

The goal of NATO has always been to guarantee the security and independence of its member states, while extending that security to neighboring countries. The ability of NATO to prevent crises and conflicts depends on NATO's capacity to respond to an ever-changing global security environment.

Agenda outline

This will be NATO’s first summit “at 26” during which member countries will assess and take forward a large number of ongoing transformation processes.

Embracing transformation in a broad sense is enabling the Alliance to accomplish its strategic vision of implementing the full range of its missions and operations, and promoting stability where it is needed to defend security and democratic values.

Quote

Kurt Volker

"Transformation is an ongoing process, and in November, NATO will hold a summit in Riga, Latvia to deepen its capabilities for its current and future operations, and enhance its global reach to meet today’s demands

Kurt Volker,
Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State
