A TOUCH OF LATVIAN FOLK MUSIC
A collection of contemporary Latvian folk music compiled of tracks from albums by ILGI and the Latvian Folk Music Collection.
SCHOLA CANTORUM RIGA - RIGA MASS
This album is a compilation of medieval Gregorian chants most closely connected with Riga and the history of music that was played in this city during the Middle Ages. Even more unique is the fact that the 14th century Missale Rigense, including the scores of chants that used to be rendered at the Riga Dome Cathedral Masses, has reached us through the centuries.
LATVIAN EVERGREEN
Most Latvian classical music lovers will be able to hum along to the music contained in this CD. The arrangements made by Māris Briežkalns and Viktors Ritovs allow us to recognize the melodies created by the classical composers, yet at times, the translation into the language of jazz has graced these hits with completely unexpected colours. Emīls Dārziņš, who is one of the most beloved Latvian composers, is represented here by a megahit of Latvian classical music, the Valse mélancolique, and a sentimental call to the beloved one to close her eyes and indulge in reverie, Close Your Eyes. Equally popular are the songs written by Arvīds Žilinskis, who has composed operas, operettas, and songs for solo voice. To the Composer is a dedication to Mozart, the Winter Snow is a children’s story about a hare vainly looking for his friend, the hedgehog, among snowdrifts. Jānis Mediņš, a master of orchestral colour, was fond of composing chamber music; his Dainas is a collection of piano miniatures, which he wrote through the course of his lifetime. Alfrēds Kalniņš, who was especially distinguished at composing solo songs, wrote a song named I Wonder, which is a story about a home sweet home where the door has been shut forever. In this CD, we can also hear music composed by Ringolds Ore, a pioneer of Latvian popular music, and Indulis Kalniņš, who dedicated himself to theatre music.
