7 Sep - People from the whole world visit the NATO Summit website

The NATO Riga Summit Internet Website, which is accessible to Latvia and the world – www.rigasummit.lv – has been operating for three months and ever more increasing attention from the whole world is being turned to it.  In August, people from 97 different countries visited the NATO Summit Homepage and it has therefore also contributed to an expansion of an understanding of Riga and Latvia.

This year, there was an unusual start  to the new school year at the Riga Hansa Secondary School where the Meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government Task Force, together with the help of the schools pupils, during this morning September 1, prepared special greetings for a group of NATO Summit guests being the media representatives coming from all over the world.

As the new school year begins, the Summit of NATO Heads of State and Government Task Force in co-operation with the Latvian Transatlantic Organization (LATO), Art Education Centre “Three Colours” and the Centre for Curriculum Development and Examinations (ISEC) invites children from primary schools to participate in a visual art competition called “Learn about NATO!”.

22 Aug - Ships from NATO states will arrive in Liepāja

On Friday, August 25, STANDING NATO MCM GROUP1 (SNMCMG1) will arrive in Liepāja in an unofficial visit. The SNMCMG1 is composed of 9 ships from eight different countries: Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, Poland, and Germany. The purpose of this visit is to facilitate cooperation among Naval Forces of different countries, as well as to take an opportunity to provide recreation facilities for sailors.

During the following weeks almost 40 art teachers from Latvia will study NATO and the history of its brand in a series of seminars called “The way from idea till image and brand” organized by the NATO Summit Latvia Task Force in cooperation with the Art Education Centre “Trīs Krāsas” (Three Colours).

1 Aug - Minister of Defence discusses issue of visa-free regime with the USA

During the meeting in Washington with the Assistant Secretary of Condoleezza Rice for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried, the Latvian Minister of Defence discussed current issued in Iraq, as well as preparatory works of NATO Summit to be held in Rīga. Participants of negotiations admitted that the situation in Iraq still is inflammable and therefore its development should be followed carefully. However, in relation to Meeting of NATO Heads of States and Governments in Rīga representatives of the US and Latvia expressed their satisfaction on the successful preparatory works, also talked over the range of issued to be viewed in the Summit.

On Saturday, July 22nd, the special NATO Information Tent and the NATO Riga Summit Air-balloon are visiting Jekabpils town during the town festival. The Latvian Transatlantic organization (LATO) in cooperation with NATO Riga Summit Task Force has launched the project “NATO Information Tent and Air-Balloon in the Latvian Town Festivals” which is visiting Latvian cities and towns during the summer period.

During July 13-15, 2006 an international Young Leaders Forum “Building Bridges for the Next Generation” was held in Riga with participants representing NATO member and partner countries. Young leaders from various backgrounds - academic, NGO, business and governmental sectors - had the opportunity to meet NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and to discuss several international security issues.
