A set of NATO postcards „Feeling Safe” has been released

Riga, 12 June

In preparation for the meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government in Riga this November, NATO has released a set of original postcards “Feeling Safe”. From 12 June they have been placed in cafes of Riga to promote the upcoming NATO Summit and the newly developed Riga NATO Summit Herald to Latvia and the World – www.rigasummit.lv .

The design of the postcards features three icons symbolizing safety and security - the cupped hands, the broken glass and the umbrella. The first two characterize the fragility of our environment, and therefore the need for security organizations like NATO. The umbrella, in its turn, marks the need for protection, which NATO can help to provide. Each of the postcard icons is a removable sticker, making it interactive.

The postcards have been made with particular appeal to young people, in order to invite them to visit NATO and Riga NATO Summit web pages. Both websites are important gateways to explore NATO’s evolving agenda and the way NATO is addressing new threats and challenges.

A set of postcards devoted to NATO Summit in Riga is part of NATO’s larger interactive project for young people. NATO stated developing these types of innovative, direct communication tools like postcards after the September 11 terrorist attacks, when there was a sharp increase in the number of queries received from teenagers on NATO’s role in today’s security environment.

"Although the Riga Summit is not a summit on NATO enlargement as such, as you know, NATO allies will soon begin drafting exact language on a signal we want to send to countries who aspire NATO membership.  How exactly that signal will look like is a bit difficult to say, but I think I'm not far off the mark if I say it will be an encouraging signal to them..

NATO Secretary General
