Allocation of official holidays for State Budgetary Authorities during NATO Summit approved

On June 13, the order of the Cabinet of Ministers drafted by the Ministry of Defence ”On Allocation of Holidays” was approved stipulating November 28 and 29 as official holidays in authorities funded by the State budget, as well as recommending allocation of holidays also for local authorities, businessmen and organizations.

Thus inhabitants of Latvia will be provided with an opportunity to follow the process of the Meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government and related public activities – discussions, conferences, exhibitions and demonstrations meant especially for Latvian and international public with an aim to reflect and explain NATO aims and tasks in an understandable manner.

During events assembling the heads of leading countries from the whole world special traffic restrictions, as well as security measures are introduced substantially influencing the everyday life of the society.

According to the calculations made by the Ministry of Economics, official holidays due to the NATO Summit Meeting could reduce the Gross Domestic Product by not more than approximately seven million lats thus avoiding serious influence on the national economy and decrease of budget revenue. The governmental decision on allocation of official holidays will apply to state budgetary authorities. However, also local authorities and entrepreneurs are invited to take this decision into account.

"Although the Riga Summit is not a summit on NATO enlargement as such, as you know, NATO allies will soon begin drafting exact language on a signal we want to send to countries who aspire NATO membership.  How exactly that signal will look like is a bit difficult to say, but I think I'm not far off the mark if I say it will be an encouraging signal to them..
