Commencement of the training of the NATO Summit volunteers

2.11.2006The NATO Summit Latvia Task Force has become acquainted with the majority of the 600 volunteers who will help the NATO Summit organizers in the last weeks before the meeting and during it to ensure the successful staging of this significant event.
The NATO Summit Latvia Task Force sincerely thanks Latvia’s residents for their great responsiveness and desire to contribute to the success of the NATO Summit. It was a pleasure to see that the volunteers have advanced English and communication skills and that they are able to quickly and sometimes also in a very creative manner, find an appropriate solution to the different situations that may occur during the NATO Summit. Unfortunately, although most of the applicants were very knowledgeable and willing to work, due to the large number of applicants, not all of them will have the opportunity to assist in the conduct of the summit. Therefore, the summit organizers encourage everybody to show initiative and take up similar opportunities in the future.
Beginning this week, the first training session will be held to allow the volunteers to acquaint themselves with the operational procedures of the NATO Summit, as well as learn about their tasks and get ready to fulfill their respective job responsibilities and represent Latvia. Training will be given according to each of the five areas of Summit activity: the press centre, the activities of the NGOs, cultural events, transport and logistics, information technologies, as well as organizational and technical arrangements.
In response to the NATO Summit Latvia Task Force request for assistance, 2361 residents of Latvia applied to perform volunteer work during the NATO Summit. There was keen competition as there were four candidates for each position. The first NATO Summit volunteers will start work on November 13 and will assist the organizers until November 30.
