NATO Secretary General satisfied with the NATO Summit to be held in Riga

„I am sure Riga is an excellent choice for hosting the meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government”, the Secretary General of NATO Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said today at the meeting with the Head of NATO Summit Task Force Mr. Edgars Rinkevics and the Latvia Task Force. 

At the meeting E. Rinkevics expressed his thanks to the Secretary General of NATO for the NATO’s choice of Riga as a meeting site of the Alliance leaders and for successful co-operation with the NATO Summit Task Force Planning Team during the preparatory process of the Summit. He briefed the Secretary General about the organization process of the NATO Summit in Riga and the events planned for the NATO Summit in November.

In conclusion the Secretary General of NATO expressed his assurance that the Summit would be a success and wished good luck to the NATO Summit Latvia Task Force. Then the Secretary General of NATO together with the Head of NATO Summit Latvia Task Force visited the Olympic Sport Centre – the venue of the upcoming NATO Summit.

The Secretary General of NATO Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is visiting Latvia on 14 July. During the visit he will meet the President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis, Defence Minister Atis Slakteris and Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks, as well as will address the Young Leaders Forum and attend the 800th anniversary celebration event in Cēsis.
